The kind of care available
There are 2 types of care available – domiciliary care received in your own home, or care homes catering for a range of needs.
Considering a care home can be a difficult decision, not just for the individual, but for the whole family. Often the person involved needs an additional level of care than that they are able to receive at home. There are essentially two different types of care homes:
| |
Residential homes
Residential care homes provide help with personal care i.e. washing and getting dressed. They aim to assist individuals to live independently as much as possible and provide emotional support. Some homes specialise in certain types of care e.g. dementia. In some instance psychiatric assessments may be required; this is to ensure your loved one is in the best home for their requirements.
Nursing homes
Generally nursing homes are for people who are frail and in need of care from a registered nurse. Again, some homes specialise for individuals with specific requirements, and you should always discuss the level of care required with your chosen home.

How to find care
Contact Social Services at your Local Authority who will make an assessment of the individual requiring care to enable their particular needs to be identified. This may also include a psychiatric assessment. Everyone is entitled to an assessment even if they are likely to be paying for the full cost of care themselves.
If at all possible, social services will recommend supporting the individual in their own home with additional domiciliary care.
If the individual needs to go into a care home, there are always things to consider before choosing the ideal home. If convenient, it may help to arrange a period of respite care for the individual to enable them to discover the specific care offered in a home and whether it is suitable.
Looking for further information?
There are many organisations that can help with finding further information about the care industry and the type of care you may be looking for.
The Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI) register residential and nursing care homes. They are responsible for inspecting homes regularly and a certificate of registration should be on display in the home. Reports on individual care homes can be found on the CSCI website
www.csci.org.uk, or phone CSCI on 01865 393204 for more information.
